Feeling good today. |
cool stuff I like. |
You know, go ahead and say that Batgirl of Burnside Babs lacks her intellectual abilities. I don’t care.
Even though it’s a sign that you probably haven’t read through the first volume , because there are scenes where Barbara literally re-creates scenes from her past in front of her eyes using only her memory, or makes a back up for a phone’s data using only her mind.
Her eidetic memory is emphasized perfectly and is probably one of her greatest abilities.
But sure, Burnside Babs is dumbed down. Totally.
*insert sarcasm here*
She has a great memory. She can write codes. Yes, she’s smart. It’s basically shoved into every single panel.
However, when I- and many others- say that she’s been dumbed down, I’m not talking about her academic capabilities or whatever. I’m talking about how she challenged a criminal to a drag race on a public street, potentially endangering the lives of innocent civilians; I’m talking about how she’s actively escalated dangerous situations when barely any action was needed. I’m pretty sure that there are a lot of criticisms out there that have more depth than some irrational comment about her not being able to rewrite a code in five minutes. Having a perfect memory means you have a perfect memory- that doesn’t mean you’re _smart_.

honestly, i’m tired of my narrative as a rape/csa/sex abuse survivor being exploited and turned into a Power Fantasy made for nonsurvivors by nonsurvivors, as if my trauma makes me some badass to be consumed when it has explosions and cool aesthetes. im happy everyone is enjoying mad max but im not happy that literal rape survivors still arent sure if we can handle films like that bc we still are largely unsafe.
meanwhile i dont feel safe enough to speak up abt even this or anything else relating 2 this topic bc Fandoms would rather have their silent, fictionalised survivors used 4 their Power Fantasy Fodder than ever have to listen 2 survivors in general?
& i mean if ur a survivor that can enjoy this type of stuff and be comfortable w/ nonsurvivors taking our narratives for the consumption of nonsurvivors (while still living w/ the double standard) then thats great. but you also have a duty to respect when others of us arent comfy w/ it
tl;dr rape survivors arent ur Power Fantasy 2 be consumed when its convenient tbh

Have I mentioned how much I love this woman?
every time i see someone praising Kendrick’s tweet, i get so grossed out. she’s literally reducing some of the central protagonists of the film to their bodies, WHEN THE MOVIE IS LITERALLY ABOUT HOW THEY’VE BEEN ENSLAVED AND RAPED BECAUSE THEIR WORLD DEFINES THEM BY THEIR BODIES.
seriously, Mad Max is about women escaping sexual slavery. what they are wearing (which doesn’t even make them half naked) was forced onto them by their captor, just like their horrifying toothed chastity belts (which they are shown snapping off of themselves in a pretty compelling scene). they are five women who, on their own volition, defy a powerful war lord and three armies to gain autonomy and escape sexual violence. they are not trained in combat, but they fight courageously and often use their cleverness in place of physical strength. they declare “we are not things!” and, in faces pf the men who seek to re-enslave them, they boldly demand, “who killed the world?”
the central villain of the film is a rapist who views women as “his property” and forcefully impregnates them. he is portrayed as being despicable beyond comprehension. those who try to harm the women meet grisly fates.
once more, these women were rescued by another woman who was enslaved as a child. they are eventually joined by an entire group of badass, older biker women who further remind them that they are so much more than their bodies. there are only two male protagonists: one, Max, was initially willing to abandon them to their fates, and the other, Nux, was initially a brainwashed servant to their captor. both men only come to help the women when they are reminded of their humanity. neither ever take the spotlight from the women: it is their story – Max and Nux are just a part of it.
meanwhile, Pitcch Perfect features really gross racism that makes South Americans fleeing poverty and violence into the butt of jokes, reduces its lesbian character to a stereotype, and defines the fat girl entirely by her fatness because ISN’T IT FUNNY HOW SHE’S CONFIDENT EVEN THOUGH SHE SHOULDN’T BE SINCE SHE’S FAT LOL???

I keep thinking how much more powerful the Spiderman origin story would be if Peter Parker was an African American kid, whose Uncle Ben was shot by police while being arrested for a minor parking infraction. There is no formal investigation, and Peter decides to put himself on the line to prevent it happening again. He tackles the white crimes that go unpunished, punishes POC criminals fairly. He is the leveler, always fighting to be without bias, to be just. To protect people like his uncle.
This not only mirrors so much of what’s happening in America, but feeds right into the complex relationship between Spiderman, the authorities and the media.
Peter Parker is a brilliant student, awkward, a nerd, but is branded a thug, a gang member, a criminal, because of his appearance. The media latch on to that and misrepresent him totally.
The police, humilitated by the fact that he refuses to work with them and often punishes cops themselves for brutalizing innocent people, or guilty people who still deserve better treatment than they get, attempt to hunt him down.
……ooh.

No. Just. NO. I am so sick of this bullshit stereotype being both perpetuated AND played out. No.

Saying nice girls go with the assholes is the biggest stereotype in relationships of all time

“a writer’s character’s viewpoints don’t reflect the writer’s viewpoints!!!” actually, they do.
that doesnt mean having a, for instance, homophobic character means the author is homophobic. but how is the homophobia treated? is it criticized? is it excused, idealized? is it framed so that the homophobia is clearly wrong? does the inclusion of homophobia in the narrative serve a point?
writers, especially professional published writers, know that their writing has an impact, and the morals they put forward in their work reflect deeply on themselves. they know how they frame and present their work can completely change the result and effect it has.
so maybe the character’s viewpoints don’t say much about the writer, but how the writer presents this character and its viewpoints says a hell of a fuckin lot about the writer.
